BUT, MALCOLM IS IN TROUBLE FOR OTHER REASONS!!

Sunday, 27 July 2003

Yesterday we went driving and walking around Cape Town so that I can find more things to take photos of for the 26 things project.

I often forget how beautiful Cape Town is. Walking with camera in hand certainly allows one to see things in a different light. One tends to appreciate the things surrounding you more.

One of the places we visited was the Cape of Good Hope Castle. I needed to take a photo of a monument - the “sound” photo over at eyecontact was also taken there - you’ll see why I could not resist it.

“The Castle of Good Hope is the oldest surviving building in South Africa. Built between 1666 and 1679, this pentagonal fortification replaced a small fort of timber and clay built by Commander Jan van Riebeeck in 1652 upon establishing a maritime replenishment station at the Cape of Good Hope for the Dutch East Indian Company or better known as the VOC (Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie) On 26 April 1679 the five bastions were named after the main titles of Willem, the Prince of Orange. The Western Bastion was named Leerdam; followed in clockwise order by Buren, Katzenellenbogen, Nassau, and Oranje. In 1936 the Castle was declared a National Monument. As a result of an extensive, ongoing restoration and conservation program launched in the 1980's, the Castle of Good Hope remains the best preserved of its kind built by the VOC in regions where it had interests in previous centuries. Today, the Castle of Good Hope house the regional headquarters of the South African Army in the Western Cape, the famous William Fehr Collection of historic artworks, the Castle Military Museum and ceremonial facilities for traditional Cape Regiments.” (From here.)

The World Press Photo Exhibition was on at the Castle. There is something really weird about taking a photo of a winning World Press Photo ...

The reflection of the flash is coincidental.

Were Uday and Qusay’s “bodies”,

that were shown to the press today,

created by the fine sculptors at

Madame Tussauds?

Well, were they?

Huh? Lest the eagles should fly away? We have weird neighbours ...

It is winter in Cape Town and we are not getting enough rain.

(This is part of our garden - our stairway to nowhere.)

How long is this going to go on for:

“A weblog, also known as a blog, is a frequently updated website consisting of dated entries arranged in reverse chronological order so that the reader sees the most recent post first. The style is typically personal and informal.”

It’s like saying:

A hamburger, also known as a burger, is a sandwich made with a patty of ground beef, usually in a roll or bun that has been sliced in half. The order is normally bottom part of roll or bun, then beef patty, then top half of roll or bun so that when the eater bites into the hamburger (or burger) s/he bites into all three layers of the hamburger (or burger).

Imagine having to read through that each time someone mentions a hamburger (also known as a burger, it is a sandwich made with a patty of ground beef, usually in a roll or bun that has been sliced in half. The order is normally bottom part of roll or bun, then beef patty, then top half of roll or bun so that when the eater bites into the hamburger (or burger) s/he bites into all three layers of the hamburger (or burger)) on a website or magazine or newspaper!

*shrug*

I have put some more pictures up at eye contact and got rid of the darn thumbnails. Personally, I’d rather go and make a cup of tea while a page is is downloading than spend 15 minutes clicking on each stamp sized picture to see the bigger version ...

This is horribly sad!

Taken on 09/07/03 at the protest march (see below).

As your plane touches down in Dakar, Senegal, we welcome the opportunity of your visit to examine the US Africa relationship and to establish ties that are based on honesty, respect and a clear commitment to removing the structural obstacles that impede Africa's development. We would like to raise the following issues for your consideration. They are not new ones, but there is an opportunity, with your visit, to act decisively and change the image and relationship of your Administration with Africa ....”  more

A man walks down the street
He says why am I soft in the middle now
Why am I soft in the middle
The rest of my life is so hard
I need a photo-opportunity
I want a shot at redemption
Don't want to end up a cartoon
In a cartoon graveyard
Bonedigger Bonedigger
Dogs in the moonlight
Far away my well-lit door
Mr. Beerbelly Beerbelly
Get these mutts away from me
You know I don't find this stuff amusing anymore
~~~~
A man walks down the street
He says why am I short of attention
Got a short little span of attention
And wo my nights are so long
Where's my wife and family
What if I die here
Who'll be my role-model
Now that my role-model is
Gone Gone
He ducked back down the alley
With some roly-poly little bat-faced girl
All along along
There were incidents and accidents
There were hints and allegations
~~~~

A man walks down the street
It's a street in a strange world
Maybe it's the Third World
Maybe it's his first time around
He doesn't speak the language
He holds no currency
He is a foreign man
He is surrounded by the sound
The sound
Cattle in the marketplace
Scatterlings and orphanages
He looks around, around
He sees angels in the architecture
Spinning in infinity
He says Amen! and Hallelujah!

Now, this is really not a nice way to talk about our guest, but then anyone who comes to South Africa and only spends time in Pretoria is a blithering idiot.

This is not a pop-up. It will not close if you click on the X.

Dear President Bush,

Seeing as you are coming to visit us, I feel I should let you know where we keep our weapons of mass destruction. They can be found in:

1. No Name Brand Sardines - 120g cans;

2. Choice Garlic Flakes - 100ml bottles;

3. Lucky Star Pilchards in Chilli - 155g cans;

4. Simba Fritos Barbecue Strip Pack X4s packets.

Proof can be found here and here.

Oh, and then we have a few of these:

But we don’t hide them. Or use them much.

Now that we have this out of the way and you don’t need to waste time searching for our WMD, please spend some time exploring Sea Point.

Best wishes

For today, there is just this and this. Oh, and please have a look at this.

My parents have just returned from attending my brother’s wedding in Los Angeles. I am now off to find out whether they have come home with American accents ....

Before the wedding,

I forgot that it was FARRAGO’s birthday on 29 June.

The very first FARRAGO entry can be seen here

A few things:

1. Thank you very much to Shelley for allowing the penguins to move into her home.

2. eye contact continues, most photos will be posted there.

3. FARRAGO’s world of blogs continues. If you have any suggestions for this list, please feel free to leave them in the comments.

4. I don’t know what I did, but somehow I managed to mess up properly. For this reason, all the old FARRAGO pages will stay at Netfirms. Don’t ask.

5. I don’t know what I did, but somehow I managed to mess up properly (again). I had to recreate all the eye contact pages, that’s why it looks different. Don’t ask.

6. I am taking part in the 26 things project. Check it out here.

7. I don’t like the whole “thumbnail business” going on at eye contact. I think I am going to change that over the weekend.

Cheerio - until tomorrow.
